In 1970, Women's Liberation was sweeping the country. In the San Francisco Bay Area, some women's "libbers" came together and formed the San Francisco Women's Centers to help nurture newly emerging organizing efforts fighting for women's rights. Ten years later, it was a group with an annual budget in the low thousands of dollars that took the audacious step of buying a building in San Francisco's Mission District. This book tells the story of how they got to that point and the first twenty years of developing it into the home that it is today for countless women and their organizing efforts on behalf of girls and women. Author SUSHAWN ROBB went to scores of events and meetings at the Women's Building in the 1980's and served on the Board of Directors from 1994-2000. This book is based on research of the Women's Building archives housed at the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Historical Society. Playwright MERCILEE M. JENKINS, Professor of Communication at S.F. State University, worked with students and other volunteers to collect oral histories from founders. These stories inspired the play She Rises Like a Building to the Sky, produced as part of the Building's 25th anniversary celebrations. Sushawn Robb has done an outstanding job of capturing the spirit of an important time in feminist herstory in San Francisco. What's especially key about this book is that it tells the story of a building that is still vital and central to feminist organizing in SF. One of the bonuses of the book is that it includes the play "She Rises Like a Building to the Sky," which shows how daring the founding mothers were but also clues us all in to their fears and insecurities as they successfully took on the bold challenge that resulted in the creation of a sustainable home and gathering place for women of diverse cultures, ages, sexualities, and gifts. The women who lived the early history of the building need to give Robb much praise for offering future generations of feminists a valuable blueprint.Product details

Mothering the Movement The Story of the San Francisco Women Building Sushawn Robb 9781432781057 Books Reviews
"Mothering the Movement" is a excellent account of a historical movement that had a big impact on me and millions of other women and men.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to know the history of the San Francisco Women's Building. It also serves as an excellent cast study of how second wave feminists build a grass roots movement and counters many media-based stereotypes. Yes, there were lesbians involved but no they didn't waste time burning their bras. They were too busy starting women's centers, rape crisis centers and otherwise changing the world. Robb's book is based on oral histories and other archival materials from the women who founded and operated the San Francisco Women's Building, which still exits today. Another unique feature is that the book contains a play which dramatizes the process of deciding to buy the Building and the first year after purchase. Robb sheds light on broader issue in progressive politics while describing the development of this feminist organization.
Mothering the Movement is about San Francisco's women's movement and their successful attempt to purchase a building. The only women's building to survive over the years, the largest contributor to its success is the fact that the SF movement recognized the need to carve it's own destiny by being property owners. This is the story of the struggles to obtain, maintain and update the building over the decades.
A rare slice of history (herstory if you will), the book is funny, smart and full of anecdotes about what to do and what not to do, if you're a fledgling movement. I highly recommend to any student of history.
