What's holding your world together? As the planet suffers a mysterious natural disaster, Nathan is left wondering how far he'll go to keep himself and those he loves safe.

Unbroken eBook Jon Windham Jessica Windham

This debut novel from Jon Windham provides a fresh perspective on a common literary trope: post-apocalyptic America. The story follows Nathan, an ordinary man searching for his lost wife after an event he dubs "The White" wipes out nearly all of humanity and grants the survivors with extraordinary abilities. Windham never bothers with delving into the nature of "The White" (other than the protagonist's internal musings), but instead focuses on Nathan's perspective as he travels from Florida to New York in search of his spouse, who may or may not even be alive.

The fantastical elements of the story are only a backdrop to explore the main theme of the novel: Nathan discovering just how far he will descend into violence to reunite with his love. The distinction between good and evil is blurred throughout the story as Nathan encounters others, and crosses lines both he and the reader will find uncomfortable. Neither the story nor Nathan excuses these actions, thankfully. It's left to the reader to decide if Nathan is justified in becoming a monster to stop monsters. He acquires a young companion on the way, and the author uses her to keep Nathan grounded as he seeks to prevent her from having to make the same choices he finds himself making.

In the third act, Nathan is finally given an opponent that is clearly "evil", and the theme of blurred lines is put on the backburner for a climactic battle worthy of a big-budget super-hero movie.

I was incredibly satisfied with the conclusion, which I personally don't think could have ended any other way. (Spoiler-ish note: I'm a sucker for metaphysical, cosmic stuff).

Windham brings a fresh voice to the genre, avoiding standard archetypes in favor of real people reacting to unreal situations. There are hopefully many more stories from him in the pipeline.

Unbroken eBook Jon Windham Jessica Windham Reviews

What a great book, it really grabbed me at the beginning and just didn't let go. Jon Windham has a knack for making you feel like you're up close and personal with all the action-packed fistfights and really has great pacing throughout the book. The little moments of humor he still manages to include are such quality.
I think the first review did a great job providing a synopsis. I enjoyed every minute. The vividly detailed fight scenes would be amazing on the big screen. The soirees into the existential aren't decisive but do provide an avenue for thought. The pacing of the book continually drew me in. That's all I will say so I do not lessen the blow for future readers. If you dig action, fantasize about being a survivalist, and have a touch of the romantic, you will find this an enjoyable read.
